Newcastle United signed Loris Karius to a short-term deal back in September, and now the goalkeeper could be set to stay at St James’ Park.

Karius started the season as a free agent. He was released by Liverpool, having endured a torrid time at Anfield.

But with Karl Darlow suffering an injury after the transfer window had closed, Newcastle needed to turn to the free agent market.

Ben Foster was linked with a move to Tyneside, but in the end the Magpies brought in Karius. He agreed a short-term deal until January, when Darlow would be fit once again.

The 32-year-old has now recovered from injury, and could feature in the friendly against Al-Hilal. But that doesn’t mean that Karius’ short Newcastle career is over.

Loris Karius could now be set to stay at Newcastle

According to Newcastle World, the club are set to hold contract talks with Karius. They report that Eddie Howe is open to keeping the 29-year-old at the club, and a new deal could be on the horizon.

He is now third choice at St James’ Park following Darlow’s recovery, but that does not mean the German has not impressed since his move to the North East.

Newcastle World add that Karius has ‘improved significantly’ since signing for the Magpies, while he has also fitted in well with the group. If Karius is happy with his role at Newcastle then keeping him at the club would be wise.

His arrival came as a shock in September – simply down to his reputation at Liverpool. He was involved in some horror moments for the Reds, including the 2018 Champions League final. His errors in a Liverpool shirt led to Alisson Becker arriving, who has established himself as one of the best keepers on the planet.

It has been quite the journey for Karius since then. He had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin before being released last summer.

Newcastle gave him a chance on a short-term deal, and it sounds like he has impressed enough to earn a longer contract.

We might even see him in action for the first time tonight when the Magpies take on Al-Hilal in a friendly.
