Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Mason Mount, but it looks like Liverpool are leading the race to secure his signature.

Mount is currently in talks to extend his Chelsea contract, but those discussions have stalled. That has led to various Premier League clubs taking a close look at his situation, including both Newcastle and Liverpool.

90min recently reported that both sides, alongside Manchester City and Manchester United, were watching Mount’s contract standoff with intrigue.

The 24-year-old’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in 2024, and he could be sold if an extension is not agreed between now and the end of the season.

Mount would be a sensational signing for Newcastle, who are set to be in the market for a midfielder. However, TalkSPORT’s latest report suggests that Liverpool are the frontrunners.

Mason Mount to Liverpool is ‘highly likely’

According to TalkSPORT, Liverpool are growing in confidence that they are going to sign Mount during this summer’s transfer window. The report adds that sources close to the player believe that a move to Anfield is now highly likely.

It will be a huge surprise to see Mount leave Chelsea, but that now looks more likely to happen with talks over a new deal stalling.

He will be a good addition to a Liverpool side that has struggled this season, and a move to Anfield will be even more appealing if they can save their campaign and qualify for the Champions League. Michael Owen believes that will happen if they get through their next six games unscathed.

As for Newcastle, a deal for Mount always felt like a longshot. He would be perfect at St James’ Park in Eddie Howe’s system, but the finances involved and the competition for his signature always made a move unlikely.

Of course, nothing is certain yet. But the word from TalkSPORT is that ‘Mount to Liverpool’ is likely to happen very soon.
