Newcastle transfer news: Mason Mount open to Premier League move

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Mason Mount, and a new report claims that the midfielder is open to a transfer away from Chelsea.

According to ESPN, the 24-year-old is willing to leave the Blues and join another club in the Premier League.

That could be good news for the Magpies, who are looking to sign a midfielder this summer and are reportedly keeping an eye on Mount’s contract situation.

90min recently stated that Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs who are closely watching Mount as talks over a new Chelsea contract stall.

His current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in the summer of 2024, with the Chelsea owners looking to secure his long-term future. However, that is proving to be easier said than done.

ESPN have provided some more information on why Mount is yet to put pen to paper on a new Chelsea contract.

They state that one of the issues is that the England international does not want to sign an incredibly long deal like the new arrivals at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea signed Mykhailo Mudryk and Benoit Badiashile in January, and they agreed eight-and-a-half and seven-and-a-half year contracts respectively.

ESPN add that Mount also wants a pay rise to reflect his status at the club. He currently earns £80,000-a-week.

With talks stalling and little progress being made, ESPN suggest that Chelsea could eventually decide to sell Mount – who is keen on remaining in England.

That could open the door for Newcastle, who are keen on the ‘phenomenal‘ midfielder. However, they will have to join a queue of elite clubs.

The likes of Manchester City and Manchester United are keen, as are Liverpool. That could complicate matters for the Magpies, as those clubs would be willing to pay more money and offer higher wages.

But if Newcastle want to make a statement when they sign a midfielder this summer then they could do a lot worse than Mount. He is a top class player, and would be a difference maker in the middle of the park – especially if we qualify for the Champions League.
