Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Cody Drameh, but Leeds United have now decided they want to keep the young defender.

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who believes that Jesse Marsch’s side are now ‘fighting’ to stop the 21-year-old leaving Elland Road in January.

Drameh has been linked with a move to Newcastle, with Eddie Howe eyeing more depth at right-back. The Magpies have been linked with the likes of Harrison Ashby and Ivan Fresneda, and Drameh is another option for Newcastle in that position.

Dan Ashworth is looking to sign someone young, who could then eventually go on to replace Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle must believe Drameh is capable of that if they are keen, and it had been claimed that he wants to leave Leeds when the transfer window opens. It was also reported that the Yorkshire side would be willing to let him exit the club on a permanent deal.

However, that no longer appears to be the case.

Romano says Leeds want to keep Drameh now

According to Romano, Leeds now want to keep Drameh at the club, who now has interest from Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. They add that Marsch wants him to stay, and will offer him more playing opportunities in the future.

Romano also states that a loan deal isn’t an option, although that probably wouldn’t have suited Newcastle anyway.

But while Leeds want to keep Drameh, there is no update on whether or not the defender has changed his mind.

He has only played once in the Premier League this season, and struggled as his side lost 5-2 away to Brentford. But Drameh has a lot of potential, which is why Newcastle are keen.

He showcased that potential on loan at Cardiff last season, where he massively excelled. However, his minutes in Wales have not earned him more opportunities at Leeds, much to Drameh’s disappointment.

But things could now be about to change, as Marsch does his best to keep the talented youngster at Elland Road. That may hinder Newcastle’s attempts to sign him, although they do have other options on their radar.
