Newcastle transfer news: Kieran Trippier fee claimed; misses Atleti training

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has made a fresh claim on the fee Newcastle will pay Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier.

It had initially been reported that the defender could cost the Magpies at least £25million. It was even claimed by the Northern Echo that Newcastle’s new owners would pay upwards of £30million to land the England international.

However, it looks like Trippier could cost much less than that.

Hope wrote on Twitter: “Hearing fee for Kieran Trippier is in region of £12m (likely to be add-ons) and NUFC are still expecting movement this week.”

If what Hope is hearing is true then it’s an absolute bargain. Trippier’s contract at Atletico does expire in the summer, but that is still an incredibly low fee for a player so talented.

When you add in the fact that Newcastle will have to pay a premium for players given their newfound wealth, £12million for the 31-year-old would be brilliant business.

Fresh hint that Kieran Trippier is leaving Atletico Madrid?

It was surprising to see Trippier start for Atletico on Sunday. The defender was at right-back as Diego Simeone’s side beat Rayo Vallecano 2-0.

After the game, Trippier appeared to wave goodbye to the Atleti fans, who he has called his own since his 2019 arrival from Tottenham.

But all signs suggest that his time in Spain is coming to an end. Now it has been claimed that he missed training with the La Liga side on Tuesday morning.

It looks like this deal is a goer for Newcastle. While some will remain skeptical until he’s signed on the dotted line and pictured in a Toon shirt, it appears very likely that Trippier will be PIF’s first signing as Newcastle owners.

Assuming the deal gets done, it will be a real statement of intent. Trippier is a top class player who looks likely to arrive from a Champions League side. He’s an England regular too. This is the kind of signing that we wouldn’t even dream of during the Mike Ashley era.

But things have changed at Newcastle. There is ambition now. Signing Trippier should be the first step in what is going to be a pivotal and exciting January transfer window.

And at £12milllion, it could be a bargain deal as well.
