Why Newcastle must sign Kieran Trippier as soon as possible – opinion

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with signing Kieran Trippier in January.

The England defender has reportedly been in talks with the Magpies since November, back when Eddie Howe hadn’t even been appointed.

But the rumours surrounding Trippier have continued since then. If anything, they’ve intensified. There have been claims that Newcastle are confident, and that the player is keen to join.

He would be a sensational signing for Newcastle, and a huge improvement on our current fullback options.

While there’s been a lot of speculation about Trippier signing for the Magpies, we still await official confirmation. Only then can Toon fans start to dream about seeing the 31-year-old lineup in a black and white shirt.

And with the January transfer window looming, PIF and co need to get this deal tied up as soon as possible – for multiple reasons.

Trippier signing would set perfect precedent for Newcastle

Firstly, Newcastle need to sign Trippier as quickly as they can because they desperately need him. Our defence has been appalling this season, and it seems only January can save us.

Trippier walks straight into our starting XI. With all due respect to Javi Manquillo and Emil Krafth, Trippier is in a different stratosphere to them.

But another reason Newcastle need to secure the right-back soon is because of the impact it could have on other deals.

Trippier is a big name, particularly in the Premier League. He’s an England regular, scoring in a World Cup semi-final and providing an assist in the Euro 2020 final.

If players see Trippier holding up a Toon shirt, they might be more inclined to join themselves. And that’s why it’s important to get this deal done sooner rather than later.

January is going to be pivotal for the Magpies. The signings we make will dictate whether or not we survive in the Premier League.

We need to move fast, but that’s easier said than done – especially given our position near the bottom of the table.

Barcelona have reportedly already agreed a deal to sign Ferran Torres from Manchester City in January. Newcastle need to follow suit and have their Trippier deal ready to go as soon as the transfer window opens.
