Reports are suggesting that Newcastle could sign Kieran Trippier in January.

His name was first mentioned by Guillem Balague back in November, when Newcastle were still in the process of appointing a manager.

A move seemed fanciful then. This was a Champions League player and an England regular.

But it looks like a move to St James’ Park could be a real possibility. A plethora of reports came out on Wednesday suggesting that the right-back could leave Atletico Madrid for Newcastle.

The Northern Echo claimed the Magpies are confident of a deal, stating they are willing to pay £30million for his services. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail claimed that Trippier is keen to leave the La Liga side and join Newcastle.

All signs point to the 31-year-old wearing a black and white shirt next month.

January is going to be incredibly busy for Newcastle, and it’s hard to judge who they’ll be able to sign. A lot of people have speculated that they may struggle to do deals due to their position in the table. On top of that, it’s been claimed that some teams don’t want to do business with the new Toon owners.

But Trippier would be a real blockbuster signing. It would be the kind of signing that would really turn heads.

He’s played in a Champions League final, while he won La Liga last season with Atletico Madrid. At international level, he scored in a World Cup semi-final and got an assist in the final of Euro 2020.

Bringing Trippier to St James’ Park would be a huge deal. He’s a fantastic player and a huge upgrade on what we’ve already got. And he could help attract even bigger names to the club.

As a lot of fans have said on Twitter, Kieran Trippier would be a real statement signing for PIF, Amanda Staveley and Jamie Reuben.
