Newcastle United were heavily linked with signing Christian Pulisic during the January transfer window, and now it looks like he will be available this summer.
The American winger has been a target for the Magpies during the previous two windows. It was even claimed after the summer that Eddie Howe was ‘obsessed‘ with Pulisic.
However, Newcastle’s proposal did not match Chelsea’s demands and he remained at Stamford Bridge. He also stayed put in January despite interest from Tyneside, with an injury stopping him from leaving.
But with all the new arrivals and his own injury problems, it looks like a move away from the Blues is on the horizon for Pulisic.
That could be good news for Newcastle, and now transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided some information on how much he will cost.
Christian Pulisic transfer will cost £35million
Romano has addressed Pulisic’s future on his YouTube channel.
“Christian Pulisic, according to my information, Chelsea were open to letting go in January,” Romano said.
“But what happened is a deal didn’t happen. The deal was not completed because Christian Pulisic had an injury so this is why it was not possible to proceed.
“In the summer, it is a possibility for him to leave. It will depend on the proposals. We know Chelsea want around €40million to let Pulisic leave.”
An affordable option for Newcastle
€40million translates to £35million with the current exchange rate, which could make him an affordable option for Newcastle ahead of next season.
It is a lot less than what Chelsea paid for him when they signed him from Borussia Dortmund. He cost them £58million back in 2019.
While he has shown flashes of brilliance, his move to the Premier League has not gone to plan. It is clear that he needs a fresh start somewhere else, but whether or not that is Newcastle remains to be seen.
At the start of the season, it looked like he would be a sensational signing for both football and commercial reasons.
However, things are different now. Firstly, his injury record is a major concern. He has struggled to stay fit, which would be enough to make the Magpies think twice about trying to sign him. Secondly, we signed another winger in January. Anthony Gordon arrived from Everton for £45million, and has looked lively since his move to St James’ Park.
Gordon’s arrival may mean that another wide forward is not a priority for Newcastle during the summer transfer window.
But if Howe does decide to renew his interest in Pulisic then he knows exactly how much he will cost – providing Chelsea are actually willing to do a deal with Newcastle.
