Newcastle United are now ready to make Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic their next marquee signing.

That’s according to The Mirror, who report that Eddie Howe is prioritising a wide player in January.

The Blues are expected to demand £40m for the United States international, but the Magpies hope to knock that fee down.

Although the Toon are still interested in Leeds United’s Jack Harrison and Brighton’s Leandro Trossard, the 24-year-old attacker is the preferred choice going into the winter window.

Manchester United and Arsenal are monitoring the situation, but they would prefer to bring Pulisic in on loan. Graham Potter’s side, on the other hand, prefer to sell the player.

It is believed that the former Borussia Dortmund man could be persuaded to move north, especially with the promise of regular first-team football.

Newcastle want to sign Pulisic in January

This would be a fantastic signing for the Tyneside outfit if they can get a deal across the line.

Currently, Pulisic is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2024. Therefore, when entering the January transfer window, the winger will only have 18 months left on his deal.

This puts Chelsea into an awkward position. If the 24-year-old is keen to leave as soon as possible, it is likely they will sanction a sale – in order to recuperate as much of the £58m they paid to sign him back in 2019.

At the World Cup, Pulisic demonstrated he has the ability to continue in the Premier League. For Gregg Berhalter’s side in Qatar, he scored and assisted against Iran, Wales and the Netherlands, whilst he also came away with the player of the match award against England.

As a result, he was hailed by US teammate and Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams as an ‘unbelievable player’.

Therefore, if the Magpies do have the opportunity to bring him to St James’ Park in January, Howe should jump at the chance.
