Report: Chelsea had planned to sell Newcastle target Christian Pulisic

Newcastle United may have had a chance to sign Christian Pulisic this month, but those hopes were dashed by injury.

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has stated that Chelsea had plans to sell the American winger during the January transfer window.

Pulisic was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park during the summer, with Romano claiming that the Magpies were ‘obsessed‘ with the 24-year-old. However, a deal could not be agreed.

But the £58million man continued to be talked up as a Toon target heading into 2023.

There were multiple stories involving Pulisic and Newcastle in December. The Mirror claimed that he was going to become Eddie Howe’s next marquee signing, while 90min reported that the Toon wanted to bring Pulisic to the North East on loan.

Newcastle are currently in the market for a winger, with Anthony Gordon seemingly the club’s top target. There is no talk of Pulisic arriving, and that is because he is injured.

However, Romano has stated that interested clubs like Newcastle could have had a chance to sign the USA international had it not been for the knee problem he currently has.

Romano has appeared on the CBS Soccer Podcast ‘House Of Champions’, and addressed Pulisic’s future at Stamford Bridge.

“About Pulisic, the problem is the injury,” Romano said.

“I think it was one of our first episodes here in the new year and we said keep an eye on Chelsea because if they sign a new winger, the plan is to sell Pulisic. That was the plan, from what I’m told.

“So to bring in a winger, Mudryk, and to let one player leave, and the player was Pulisic.

“Then the injury is creating a problem. Of course, with that kind of injury, almost two months out, it’s really difficult to move a player.

“That is why it is my expectation is for him to stay until the summer and probably move in the summer to another club.”

One to watch in the summer for Newcastle

Had it not been for his injury, Newcastle would probably be trying to sign Pulisic right now. Whether or not a deal would have been possible remains to be seen, given that Chelsea are currently reluctant to do business with the Magpies.

But they planned to get rid of Pulisic once they signed a replacement, and they got that in Mykhailo Mudryk.

However, a knee problem means that Pulisic is staying put, and will have to wait until the summer to resolve his future.

Whether Newcastle reignite their interest will largely depend on what happens in the coming days. Dan Ashworth is trying to complete a deal for Everton’s Anthony Gordon, with the 21-year-old keen on a move to St James’ Park.

If Newcastle do sign the young winger, it feels incredibly unlikely that a fresh move for Pulisic will be made. He would have been an excellent addition on Tyneside, but it looks like this is going to be a deal that passes us by.
