If Eddie Howe gets his wish, he could have Kierans Trippier and Tierney playing in defence for Newcastle United next season.

Newcastle have been linked with signing Tierney from Arsenal, and a new report from the Telegraph has details on how Howe feels about the Scotland international.

They report that the Toon boss is a long-term admirer of the 25-year-old, who is on the Magpies’ radar heading into the summer transfer window.

Newcastle are set to be in the market for a new left-back, with Howe looking to improve on his current options. Dan Burn has played as a makeshift left-back for most of the season, with Matt Targett now fit to provide backup. Howe also has Paul Dummett and Jamal Lewis, neither of which appear to feature in his first-team plans.

Tierney would be a step up in class, and he is seemingly someone who the Newcastle manager has had his eyes on for a while.

Eddie Howe could finally get his man in Kieran Tierney

The Telegraph are the latest outlet to report that Newcastle are interested in Tierney. It has also been claimed by the Northern Echo and the Sun, while the Chronicle have stated that he is open to a move to St James’ Park.

That will delight Howe, who is a long-term admirer of the defender according to the Telegraph.

In fact, he is such an admirer that he actually tried to sign him five years ago back when he was Bournemouth manager.

Tierney was still with Celtic in the summer of 2018, back when he was subject of interest from the Cherries. Sky Sports reported that Howe had made him their top left-back target.

Of course, a move from Celtic to Bournemouth failed to come to fruition. Instead, his big break in the Premier League would come 12 months later when Arsenal signed him for £25million.

Now it looks like his time at the Emirates is coming to an end, with Tierney no longer a guaranteed starter for Mikel Arteta.

He would definitely start for Howe at Newcastle, with the 45-year-old a huge fan of his. Tierney was his top target five years ago, and he is his top target yet again in 2023.
