Newcastle transfer news: Director shares update on Marcus Thuram future

Newcastle United have been linked with signing Marcus Thuram in recent months, and now know that he will be available on a free transfer this summer.

Thuram first emerged as a target for Newcastle ahead of the January transfer window, with talk of a bargain move away from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Despite plenty of interest, a deal did not materialise and the 25-year-old remained in Germany.

Heading into the summer, reports linking Newcastle with Thuram have continued. It has been claimed that the Magpies have contacted the France international about a move to St James’ Park, while a report in Italy stated that Newcastle are in pole position to sign the forward.

Whether or not that is the case remains to be seen, but we now know that Thuram will definitely be on the move this summer with his Monchengladbach contract due to expire.

Director says Marcus Thuram will become a free agent very soon

Thuram’s expiring contract is the reason he has so many clubs chasing his signature, but there was always an outside chance that he could stay where he is.

However, that no longer appears to be the case at all. That is because Borussia Monchengladbach director Roland Virkus has told the media that Thuram is going to leave at the end of the season.

“Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram will leave the club as free agents in June,” he said.

An appealing option for Newcastle

With the ability to play out wide or through the middle, Thuram is an appealing option for Eddie Howe. He is also enjoying a fantastic season in Germany, boasting 16 goals and five assists in all competitions.

It may all come down to wages, as Thuram will be well placed to ask for whatever he wants. There are going to be plenty of clubs competing to sign him, which might make it difficult for Newcastle to stand out.

It has previously been claimed that he wants to play in the Premier League, while his friendship with Allan Saint-Maximin could tempt him to head to St James’ Park.

Wherever he does go, it will be on a Bosman. His Borussia Monchengladbach contract is expiring, and their director has confirmed that he will not be signing a new one.
