Newcastle transfer news: Callum Wilson could leave this summer

Callum Wilson recently stated that he hopes to be a Newcastle United player ‘long term’, but that might not be the case.

The Newcastle number nine is no longer a guaranteed starter, falling behind Alexander Isak in the pecking order. And whenever Wilson comes on to score, Isak adds to his tally.

The 31-year-old is playing really well at the moment, after suffering a dip in form at the start of the year. But he is flying once again, and netted his 11th goal of the season in the 6-1 win over Tottenham. It came off the bench, becoming Newcastle’s joint-top scorer this season alongside Miguel Almiron.

Wilson has now started just one of Newcastle’s last seven games, with Isak becoming the main man. He now has double figures this season after an exceptional performance against Tottenham, despite enduring an injury ridden debut campaign on Tyneside.

And with Isak leading the line so well, it has reportedly led to Wilson questioning his future.

According to 90min, the former Bournemouth striker could leave St James’ Park this summer. They state that he wants regular first-team football, with Newcastle potentially looking to sign another forward.

It would be a real shame if Wilson does leave, as he and Isak really look to be getting the best out of each other at the moment. They are forcing each other to play at the highest level, which is why they have 11 goals between them in Newcastle’s last seven games.

With European football on the horizon, Howe is going to have to rely on his squad even more, and that could give Wilson the opportunity he craves.

However, it must be incredibly frustrating to play so well yet find yourself on the bench. He is just unfortunate that Isak is playing even better.

Wilson has not been shy about his frustrations at being on the bench. He recently said he was ‘annoyed’, which is only natural.

But whether it leads to him leaving Newcastle this summer remains to be seen. Hopefully not as he is an excellent player and an important member of the squad.
