Callum Wilson states what is ‘annoying’ him at Newcastle right now

Newcastle United need a response against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and Callum Wilson has admitted that he is not happy after last weekend’s defeat.

Eddie Howe took his side to Aston Villa, where Newcastle produced their worst performance of the season.

The Magpies were woeful at Villa Park, unable to stop Unai Emery’s rampant side. The likes of Ollie Watkins tormented us, as they went on to win 3-0.

It was just our fourth loss of the season, and the first time we have been beaten by a team outside the traditional ‘big six’ in more than a year.

After such a strong campaign, Saturday’s defeat felt like a real reality check. Now Wilson has addressed the mood in the Toon camp, and expressed how the defeat has had a real impact behind the scenes.

The 31-year-old has appeared on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, and spoke about the impact that the defeat to Aston Villa has had.

“Basically when you have been on the form and run we have been on and you’re high, you’re high, you’re high and then you lose in the manner that we did – of course it’s going to dip you. I ain’t happy,” he said.

“I’m on the bench at the minute as well, so obviously that’s something else that is annoying me.”

Wilson’s annoyance likely to continue on Sunday

The defeat at Villa Park will have been a real shock to the system for Eddie Howe’s players. It is something that has not happened at all this season. Even in defeat we have played well, but that was not the case on Saturday.

It will no doubt lead to a dip in mood, but it must also serve as motivation for the game against Tottenham. It can refocus minds ahead of what is likely going to be the biggest game of the season. A win on Sunday could really cement on our place in the top four.

For Wilson, he has admitted that he is annoyed to be on the bench, having lost his place in the side to Alexander Isak. That feels likely to continue, which will only irritate the number nine further.

At the moment, he is an impact player, and must take whatever opportunity comes his way against Spurs, just like he did against Manchester United in our previous home game.
