It seems Newcastle United are keen on defensive cover.
While, on last season’s evidence, the defence needs little changing, the increased number of games in the schedule will invariably place a much bigger strain on Eddie Howe’s squad.
Newcastle have already been linked with the likes of Joachim Andersen and Harry Maguire as the club seemingly eye reinforcements to what was the strongest area of their team last season.
Still, it is Trevoh Chalobah who is perhaps more interesting a link.
At 24, the Chelsea defender is younger than both Andersen and Maguire, fitting into the kind of strategy PIF have adopted so far.
Now, there has been a development.
Trevoh Chalobah has agreement to leave Chelsea
Indeed, according to the Evening Standard, the defender has an agreement to leave Stamford Bridge.
Should the right offer emerge, the Blues have reportedly decided to sell their academy graduate, with Inter Milan credited with an interest.
The report claims Chalobah would be open to staying at his boyhood club but only if first-team football is on offer as he bids to make it into the England squad ahead of Euro 2024.
Mauricio Pochettino, however, is said to want only four centre-back options and already has a stacked squad.
Chalobah is an interesting target
Compared to Virgil van Dijk by pundit Ian Wright, Chalobah was also praised heavily by former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.
Able to operate in a number of defensive positions, the up-side is that the player has so much of his career ahead of him.
Of the age profile PIF have tended to target thus far and with experience in the biggest competitions in club football, he may not be a particularly glamorous name but certainly one that makes a degree of sense.
Open to leaving Chelsea, Newcastle could certainly do worse.
