Newcastle are interested in a move for Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks, according to the Daily Mail.

They say that the 25-year-old is one of a number of midfield options being considered.

Hamza Choudhury is another, and there is also apparently interest in Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

Newcastle were linked with Oliver Skipp earlier in the summer, but the youngster has seemingly usurped Winks in the Spurs pecking order.

That represents a bit of a fall from grace for Winks.

A year ago, there were reports of £40 million interest from Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola is apparently a serious admirer of the midfielder, but he won’t be joining the champions this summer.

If the Euros went ahead as planned, Winks would probably have been in the squad but he was never a realistic contender for the rearranged tournament.

He needs to go somewhere where he’ll play games, and he does have good technical ability and energy.

Perhaps a loan move to the north east would reinvigorate his career, but it seems there’s plenty to do before that happens yet.
