Newcastle ready to launch move for £60m player, club expect him to go

Newcastle United are heavily linked with signing Dominik Szoboszlai this summer, and now a formal approach from the Magpies could be on the horizon.

Szoboszlai is reportedly one of Eddie Howe’s top targets heading into the transfer window, while Newcastle have been told that they must pay his release clause in full to get him.

That means Newcastle will need to pay RB Leipzig £60million to sign the 22-year-old, which would make him one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.

An official bid is yet to be launched, but a new report from the Northern Echo suggests that it could be right around the corner.

Newcastle to make Dominik Szoboszlai move soon

According to the Northern Echo, it is anticipated that Newcastle will make a formal approach to sign Szoboszlai once RB Leipzig’s season draws to a close.

They still have one game to go, as they prepare to compete in the DFB-Pokal against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. It is a chance for Szoboszlai and co to win back-to-back German Cups, having lifted the trophy in 2022.

Now they have the chance to do it again in 2023, in what could be the Hungarian’s final game for the club.

RB Leipzig plan to sell this summer

That is because the Northern Echo add that it is expected that the attacking midfielder will be sold by the Bundesliga club this summer.

With Leipzig looking to cash in on Szoboszlai, it could give Newcastle a chance to land one of their top targets. However, with his contract running until 2026, there is no chance that the Magpies will get a bargain. If they want Szoboszlai, they are going to have to pay top dollar for him. That will likely mean activating his £60million release clause.

Given how Newcastle now operate, it would be a surprise to see the club go that high with their first offer, but it at least sounds like an opening bid is not too far away. Once Leipzig’s season comes to an end on Saturday, Newcastle will make their move.
