It looks like being a big summer for Newcastle United.

After three transfer windows in the PIF era, it’s now about fine-tuning for Eddie Howe at St James’ Park. The signings of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes have proven transformative and Alexander Isak is certainly going that way, so this summer must be about adding to that to provide another push.

Indeed, Howe’s side are certainly doing well enough already and the additions made this summer have to come in and make an instant impact.

One of those could be Kalvin Phillips.

Newcastle keen to sign Manchester City midfielder Phillips

According to The Sun, the Magpies are among a number of clubs casting keen eyes over the former Leeds midfielder and could rescue him from a poor spell.

West Ham are another thought to be interested, along with Leeds themselves.

Current club Manchester City, however, are said to be ready to demand as much as £42m for the 27-year-old.

Phillips could fit right in at Newcastle

While Phillips has struggled at City, forcing into the first-team under Pep Guardiola looks a difficult task for most players.

Newcastle have lacked a traditional No.6 since Jonjo Shelvey’s injury and subsequent departure, forcing Guimaraes to play in the holding role. In signing a player like Phillips, someone Trippier has previously said is perfect to play alongside as a defender, it stands to reason Guimaraes could play further up the field.

Hailed as ‘The Yorkshire Pirlo’ during England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, Trippier said of Phillips (via Leeds Live): “The intensity that he brings to Leeds is phenomenal, and for England here. He’s great on the ball, he reads the game well.

“As a defender, you love to play with someone like him in front of you. He can go all the way to the top – and he’s playing at the highest level now.

“He’s a fantastic player and he’s got a great future ahead of him.”
