Newcastle now discuss signing 21-year-old striker on loan after Callum Wilson’s latest injury

Newcastle United’s striker situation is so bad that the Magpies could turn to a player who turned them down twice in 2022.

Eddie Howe is struggling for options in attack right now, with both of his Newcastle forwards experiencing fitness issues.

Alexander Isak is currently out of action with a groin injury, but it is hoped that he will be available to return after the international break.

The news on Callum Wilson is less encouraging, however, with the 31-year-old set for an extended period on the sidelines.

After being forced off against Borussia Dortmund, Howe stated that it looked like Wilson would be out for weeks with a hamstring problem. It seems that is the case, with the Telegraph claiming that the England international is going to be injured for at least six weeks.

That is a devastating blow, and puts a lot of pressure on Isak to stay fit – which will be challenging as Newcastle prepare to play twice a week between now and Christmas.

This could force the Magpies to sign a striker in January, with talk of a move for Brazilian wonderkid Marcos Leonardo. He is an exciting talent who would be very welcome at St James’ Park.

However, there are now reports that the club have someone else on their radar.

Newcastle reignite interest in Hugo Ekitike

According to 90min, Newcastle United are reigniting their interest in Hugo Ekitike. They state that Howe’s side are looking into a possible loan deal for the 21-year-old, who is interested in a move to the Premier League.

The name ‘Hugo Ekitike‘ is not new to Toon fans, as he is a player who actually snubbed Newcastle on two separate occasions in 2022.

He was playing for Reims back then, and was a target during the first transfer window after the takeover. Newcastle tried to sign him on deadline day that January, only for Ekitike to decide against the switch at the last minute.

Newcastle then tried again the following summer, and actually agreed a deal with Reims to sign the Frenchman. But personal terms were impossible to agree on, leading to the Magpies pulling out of the deal.

Ekitike then went on to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, which has proven to be a massive mistake.

Newcastle fans have taken great joy in Ekitike’s demise since snubbing a move to Tyneside, but now he could have a fresh chance to wear those famous black and white stripes.

It would be a real shock to see Newcastle go in for him again, but perhaps they feel it could be a case of third time lucky.

However, some fans will argue that he does not deserve a third chance after what went on last summer.
