Newcastle transfer news: Hugo Ekitike deal is off as Toon end pursuit

Hugo Ekitike will reportedly not be joining Newcastle United this summer.

That’s according to 90min, who claim that the Magpies have pulled out of a deal to sign the forward from Reims.

They state that issues with the player’s agent proved too much to overcome and that Newcastle have now walked away.

It was reported on Wednesday that agent fees were delaying the deal, and it now looks like they could be the tip of the iceberg.

The claim made by 90min is yet to be backed up by other outlets.

Newcastle had agreed a fee with Hugo Ekitike

The Magpies have been chasing Ekitike for a long time. It looked like he was going to join the club in January, only for the Frenchman to turn down a deadline day move.

Newcastle returned this summer, and talks appeared to be a lot more promising. A £26million fee was agreed, and it was hoped that Ekitike would arrive in the North East this week for a medical.

However, that won’t be the case. Instead, Newcastle have reportedly pulled the plug on the deal.

If true, it’s a hugely frustrating development. Toon officials have dedicated so much time to this deal, so for it to collapse would be a real blow.

Toon will look elsewhere if Ekitike deal is off

Newcastle desperately need to sign a forward this summer. We need more competition for Callum Wilson, who once again struggled with injuries last time out.

Chris Wood signed in January, but only scored two Premier League goals for the Magpies. Our other centre forward option is Dwight Gayle, but he is expected to leave St James’ Park this summer.

That’s why Eddie Howe wants another attacking option, and Ekitike ticks a lot of boxes. He can play through the middle or out wide – that versatility would have made him a great asset.

He’s also a huge talent with massive potential. The 20-year-old would be one for the future and the present. However, 90min don’t think he’s heading to Tyneside.

That will force Newcastle to look elsewhere. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been heavily linked, but he could prove to be too expensive.

If 90min’s report is correct, it’s back to the drawing board for Dan Ashworth. But he will no doubt have an alternative up his sleeve.
