It has not taken long for the Jordan Henderson to Newcastle United rumours to start.

The 33-year-old caused a stir during the summer transfer window, leaving Liverpool to sign for Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq.

It was a highly controversial transfer, and one that he already appears to be regretting.

It has been claimed that Jordan Henderson wants to leave Al Ettifaq, with Newcastle described as the most logical club for him. That was followed up by a claim from HITC Football that the Magpies had been made aware of Henderson’s availability.

Now the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has provided an update on the situation, admitting that there have been discussions about the midfielder at St James’ Park.

Newcastle discuss Jordan Henderson as he eyes Saudi Arabia exit

Journalist Luke Edwards spoke about Henderson on the latest episode of the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast.

“I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn now when someone told me back in October that he realised that he’d made a big mistake,” he said.

“I think we could all see that mistake unfolding in real-time, it looked like a bit of a car crash transfer from the moment he made it.”

Edwards added: “He’s offered himself to Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. That is slightly more credible than Jesse Lingard offering himself to Barcelona.

“I think he will certainly be able to do a job if he comes back to the Premier League.

“I think there’s been conversations at Newcastle, obviously that would be controversial he’s a very prominent former Sunderland player. I think there will be conversations with them.

“I think there will be clubs who are thinking about it but his current employers don’t want to let him go. As ever with football, when a player decides they want to leave and they’re desperate to get out, that normally leads to the player leaving but we’re going to have to see how hard he wants to push.”

Newcastle fans would surely not be keen on Henderson arriving

As Edwards says, Henderson knows that he made a mistake moving to Saudi Arabia during the summer.

It was a shock move for the England international, and one that has massively backfired.

Now he is looking for a route back to Europe, and it is no surprise to see Newcastle mentioned as a possible suitor. The Magpies are in the market for a midfielder, and their ties to Saudi Arabia make this an obvious link – even if Al Ettifaq are not one of the clubs owned by PIF.

Ally McCoist believes that Henderson would jump at the chance to sign for Newcastle, but I’m not sure if I would agree. His Sunderland roots would suggest otherwise, but the fact he moved to Saudi Arabia in the first place would hint that anything is possible.

But it is difficult to envision the majority of Toon fans being on board with Henderson arriving. Yes, he is a Premier League and Champions League winning captain, but he is also a Sunderland lad through and through.

On top of that, he would also be a short-term solution, which is not what the Newcastle hierarchy have often gone for since taking over at St James’ Park.

It is no surprise to hear that Newcastle have discussed it, but it would be a shock if it went any further.
