Just days after beating Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, Newcastle United’s midfield conundrum could be answered by a former Black Cats player.

Eddie Howe is looking to sign a midfielder during the January transfer window, with Kalvin Phillips the most heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old is eager to secure a move and get regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2024, with his place in the England squad currently in jeopardy.

And the same goes for Jordan Henderson.

The 33-year-old moved to Saudi Arabia at the start of the season, signing for Al Ettifaq, who are managed by Steven Gerrard.

His exit from Liverpool was highly controversial, and he is now being linked with a move back to Europe after just a few months.

A story from the Athletic said on Monday that Newcastle United were the most logical club for Henderson to join, and it has not taken long for an actual rumour to emerge.

According to HITC Football, Newcastle are one of multiple Premier League clubs who have been offered the chance to sign Jordan Henderson during the January transfer window.

They report that the midfielder is keen to return to Europe, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Ham also given the chance to sign him from the Saudi Pro League club.

Given his Sunderland roots, it is difficult to envision many Newcastle fans being keen on Henderson arriving this month.

We do need another body in midfield, but a 33-year-old is hardly a long-term solution – and that is before you consider where he comes from and who he supports.

But despite his Black Cats allegiance and likely fan backlash, there will be plenty people in Eddie Howe’s squad who would welcome Henderson to Tyneside, most notably the England internationals.

Kieran Trippier has shared the international stage with Henderson on multiple occasions, competing alongside him in three major tournaments for England.

The Toon right-back even defended Henderson as recently as October, describing him as an ‘unbelievable character’ after he was booed at Wembley following his move to Saudi Arabia.

Now he is being linked with a move away from Saudi Arabia, and it is no surprise to read that Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign him.

However, it would be a major shock if the Magpies took up that invitation.
