Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel is reportedly a transfer option for Newcastle United.
That’s according to Newcastle World, who claim that the Magpies have been made aware of Witsel’s availability.
The 32-year-old currently plays for Borussia Dortmund, but his contract is set to expire next summer.
The report adds that Juventus are keeping an eye on Witsel, but Newcastle have also spoke about the possibility of signing the Belgium veteran.
It’s no surprise that Juve are keen. They always seem to be sniffing around ageing big-name midfielders who have expiring contracts.
But would he be a good signing for Newcastle United?

Since the takeover, the Magpies have been linked with some huge names. The likes of Eden Hazard have been mentioned as possible transfer targets.
A lot of the names are unrealistic, with agents looking to cash in on Newcastle’s newfound wealth.
But is Witsel that unrealistic? While he is a top quality midfielder, he isn’t a player who has always played at the top.
After just one season with Benfica, he secured a big money move to Russian giants Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2012. Then, going into his peak years, Witsel left to join Tianjin Quanjian in the Chinese Super League.
Moves to Russia and China were somewhat surprising considering Witsel’s ability. So could a move to the bottom half of the Premier League be outside the realms of possibility?
Newcastle need reinforcements in January, and Eddie Howe has reportedly identified the need to boost his midfield options.
Witsel would certainly do that. Even at 32, he’s just as influential. Confident in possession, Witsel would instantly raise standards in the Newcastle midfield.
He also knows someone at St James’ Park, working with Graeme Jones during the coach’s time with Roberto Martinez and the Belgian national team.
As well as his ability, Witsel is a big name that may help the new Toon owners boost their credibility. Manchester City did that in 2008 when they were taken over, bringing in Brazilian star Robinho.
While a move for Witsel might not be on that level, it would certainly turn heads.
Witsel would be huge for Newcastle, on and off the pitch.
