Newcastle have now made it clear they are not going to sign £62m PL player

Newcastle United’s search for a new left-back is not going to lead to them signing one of Chelsea’s unwanted players.

It was reported earlier this summer that Marc Cucurella was a target for the Magpies. It was claimed that Eddie Howe’s side were looking to grab a bargain and wanted the Spaniard for £30million.

This comes 12 months after he joined Chelsea, arriving from Brighton for a whopping £62million. However, Cucurella failed to live up to that price tag, which has led to speculation over a move away from Stamford Bridge.

If Howe could work his magic, the 24-year-old could prove to be a decent signing if the finances are right. But a new report from the Athletic explains that Cucurella will not be swapping West London for the North East this summer.

Newcastle are not interested in Marc Cucurella

According to the Athletic, Newcastle have made it that clear that they will not be signing Cucurella from Chelsea.

That is likely because of the price, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side no doubt wanting to recoup as much money as possible if they were to sell Cucurella.

But Newcastle will not be bailing Chelsea out, and it sounds like the defender wants to continue at Stamford Bridge anyway. He has stated that he is ‘very happy’ with the Blues.

Given Newcastle’s stance, it feels likely that rumours of a move to Tyneside were agent driven. A new start could have been ideal for the former Barcelona man, whose reputation has taken a battering over the past year.

A chance to rebuild himself at Newcastle under the guidance of Howe could have been just what the doctor ordered, but the Magpies’ financial fragility meant that a deal was a non-starter.

He is obviously a player that Toon officials like – it was Dan Ashworth who signed him for Brighton after all. But the Newcastle Sporting Director will not be working with Cucurella again, who must now get his head down and fight for his place at Chelsea.

As for Newcastle, the search for a left-back goes on, as our list of targets gets smaller and smaller.
