Chelsea expect to sell two Newcastle targets, including £60m man

Newcastle United have their eye on a few players from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, two of which the Blues are expecting to get rid of.

Plenty of big names have already departed Stamford Bridge, while Christian Pulisic could be the next out the door as AC Milan look to spend the Sandro Tonali money.

More exits appear to be on the horizon, and it could be good news for Eddie Howe, who has a few Chelsea players on his wanted list.

One of those is Conor Gallagher, but it is unclear what the future holds for him beyond this summer. However, he is not on Chelsea’s ‘to sell’ list.

But while Gallagher isn’t, two other Newcastle targets are.

Chelsea expect to sell Chalobah and Cucurella

According to the Guardian, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella are two of the players who Chelsea anticipate selling this summer.

They have both been linked with moves to Newcastle, with Chalobah emerging as a target this week.

The Magpies are considering a bid for the centre-back, who has been told that he is free to find a new club ahead of next season.

As for Cucurella, he is another player who has been tentatively linked with a switch to St James’ Park. It was reported last month that Newcastle were looking at a cut price deal for the Spaniard.

Tough 12 months for Newcastle target Cucurella

It has not been a great 12 months for Cucurella, who left Brighton to sign for Chelsea last summer. They spent £60million on him, and he has proven to be a waste of money – which is why they are willing to sell.

Cucurella was brilliant in a Brighton shirt, but has struggled to perform at the same level in Chelsea blue. He was criticised by Thierry Henry last season, who was baffled by his ‘defending’ in a Champions League game against Real Madrid. The 24-year-old was accused of making a ‘double mistake’ by the Arsenal legend.

The left-back severely struggled in Europe’s elite competition, which is where Newcastle will be next season. His performances hardly suggest that he is the right man for Howe.

But he is a player who Dan Ashworth knows well. He was the one who brought him to Brighton in 2021.

If we could get that Cucurella then he would be a great signing, but there are no guarantees. For the money they would cost, it feels like Chalobah would be the better buy.
