Newcastle now in contact with £34m player’s agent, they’re ready to pay his release clause

Newcastle United are said to have held talks with ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes over the transfer of Celta Vigo’s wonderkid Gabri Veiga.

Having monitored his progress since at least March this year, Newcastle have now reportedly made their move for 21-year-old sensation Gabri Veiga.

90mins reports that Newcastle, along with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have held talks with Jorge Mendes about the ‘powerful‘ midfielder.

All four Premier League clubs are willing to activate Veiga’s release clause

Veiga’s contract contains a £36.4million release clause which Celta Vigo are demanding must be met to take him away as they do not want to sell.

There is interest in Veiga from around Europe too, with Napoli, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Marseille all having been linked with him in recent months.

It has looked almost inevitable that Veiga would move this summer. After scoring a brace against Barcelona in the last game of the season, Veiga burst into tears as he was withdrawn through injury which many people took as a sign that he’d played his last game for Celta.

Now it just remains to be seen who will win the race for the man who scored 11 goals in La Liga last season in 36 appearances. Add to that his four assists and that’s a fantastic return for any central midfielder, but for one so young it’s little wonder there are so many potential suitors.

Newcastle could probably offer Veiga more first-team opportunities

Given his release clause, and the quartet of Premier League club’s apparent willingness to pay it, it all comes down to who can offer Veiga the best terms. Each club can offer something different for him so it’s going to be interesting to see where he ends up.

Newcastle and Manchester City have the Champions League angle, Chelsea have a mind-blowing squad for him to team up with and Liverpool have Jurgen Klopp who a lot of players would love to play for. The big question for Veiga, I imagine, will be who could offer him the most first-team opportunities?

It will be a difficult task for him to walk into any of those teams’ starting XIs, but you’d think that maybe Newcastle could make the most use of him next season.
