£35m Newcastle target bursts into tears after being substituted and saving club from relegation

Last week saw reports claiming that Newcastle United had all but won the race to sign Celta Vigo’s wonderkid Gabri Veiga.

If that’s the case, then Gabri Veiga will certainly be fondly remembered by the Celta Vigo fans after he scored two goals against Barcelona in Celta’s crucial 2-1 win over the La Liga champions.

The 21-year-old’s goals and Celta’s win meant that the club avoided relegation on the final day of the Spanish season. The gravity of the situation was clearly not lost on Veiga who burst into tears as he sat on the bench after being substituted.

The brace by Veiga means that he becomes the second player heavily linked to Newcastle to potentially sign off from their club as a hero after Dominik Szoboszlai scored RB Leipzig‘s second goal in the German Cup final.

Gabri Veiga showed exactly why he is so highly thought of with his first goal last night for Celta. The ball was played through to him just outside of the area, he took it in his stride parting two Barcelona defenders and firing a tidy finish into the bottom corner.

His second goal is a little bit more up for debate. It appeared that he’d set himself for a far-post cross but the ball swerved goalward catching the Barca keeper completely off guard and the ball looped over his head and into the net. If it was deliberate it was a worldie, but the look he gave before striking the ball suggests it was purely accidental.

Either way, despite a late goal from Barcelona’s Ansu Fati – another player linked with Newcastle – Veiga’s goals were enough to seal the win and keep Celta Vigo in La Liga for another season.

However Veiga’s reaction when he was substituted on 71 minutes after picking up a knock, suggests that Celta will have to fight without their wonderkid next season. Veiga patted the badge on his chest as he walked off the pitch and then burst into tears as he sat down.

Those certainly look like the actions of someone who knows their future lies elsewhere, and with Newcastle so hotly tipped to complete a £35million move for the young Spanish midfielder, a deal could actually be very close despite claims to the contrary by The Daily Mail.

Veiga certainly looks like he is already first-team ready and will be a youngster we bring in to go straight into the main squad I think, as opposed to the other wonder kids we have our eye on who will likely be loaned out.
