Newcastle expected to make bid for 'really talented' 26-year-old player

Newcastle United are reportedly expected to make a fresh move to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this summer.

McTominay has been a target for the Magpies during the previous two transfer windows, with the Red Devils turning down a January bid from Eddie Howe’s side.

However, Newcastle are not expected to be deterred, and a fresh move for the 26-year-old is anticipated.

Man United anticipate Newcastle bid for Scott McTominay

That is according to the Athletic, who write that Man United are anticipating an approach from Newcastle for McTominay.

They add that any Newcastle offer could potentially fund Erik ten Hag’s move for Mason Mount, who is being linked with a transfer from Chelsea to Man United.

The report suggests that the Red Devils might be able to get Mount for only a little bit more than what they could receive for McTominay. His contract at Stamford Bridge expires next summer, meaning that his value has massively depleted.

It will depend on exactly how much Newcastle want him

But that gives Newcastle a conundrum. Should they make a move for McTominay, knowing that it could end up making a potential rival stronger? In essence, the Magpies would effectively be funding Man United’s bid for Mount.

It all boils down to just how much Newcastle want the Scotland international. He is highly rated by manager Eddie Howe, who is a big fan of the way the midfielder carries possession.

McTominay is a ‘really talented‘ player, and has experience in European competitions that the club now need after qualifying for the Champions League. However, a lot of Toon fans will take some convincing that he is the right man for us – especially given his reported valuation of £40million.

It has been reported that Newcastle think that figure is too much, and the Toon owners have not been ones to overspend since they bought the club in 2021.
