How Newcastle feel about Man United’s Scott McTominay asking price

Newcastle United are interested in signing Scott McTominay this summer, but not for the price that Manchester United currently want for him.

McTominay is a long-term target for the Magpies, with Eddie Howe trying to bring him to St James’ Park in January.

The Red Devils said no, but Newcastle will not be put off. He continues to be linked with a move to Tyneside, with Toon officials convinced that he would be a good addition to the squad.

Newcastle are in the market for a new midfielder, and McTominay has the power and athleticism to thrive in Howe’s team. It is why Joelinton has done so well since the former Bournemouth man replaced Steve Bruce.

If McTominay does move to Newcastle, there will be hope that he can do just as well in a black and white shirt, but a move switch to the North East currently appears to be in doubt.

Manchester United want Newcastle to pay £40million for Scott McTominay

According to ESPN, Man United value McTominay at £40million. That is too much for Newcastle, who are not interested in the 26-year-old at that price.

That is the right stance to take, as we would certainly be paying over the odds if we bowed down to Man United’s demands. While McTominay is talented, he is not a £40million player.

For context, that it is a similar price to what Bruno Guimaraes cost last year. He has taken the Premier League by storm, and is already on track to become a Toon legend.

Of course, British players in the Premier League cost a premium, but spending that much money on the Scotland international would be a huge mistake.

While Howe is always keen to bring in players with Premier League experience, it has to be for the right price. Newcastle can likely get a midfielder who is much better for less money from abroad.

It appears that McTominay does not have a future at Old Trafford, but at this rate they are going to price him out of a move away. If they are adamant about getting rid, they need to be realistic about their valuation – because if they really think he is talented enough to command a £40million fee then he should be starting for them every week.
