When reports emerged in Spain stating that Newcastle United were close to signing Gabri Veiga, they felt wide of the mark.

That immediately proved to be the case, with Fabrizio Romano pouring cold water over talk of the young Spaniard being set to join Eddie Howe’s side.

However, there has still been speculation over a deal with Celta Vigo, with Newcastle believing that Veiga has a huge amount of potential.

While that might be the case, it does not look like he is going to get the chance to realise that potential at St James’ Park.

Newcastle deny talk of Gabri Veiga signing from Celta Vigo

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United sources have denied the story that Veiga is close to joining the Magpies, adding that he is not going to be heading to the North East this summer.

It is interesting to hear sources from the club flat out deny the claim of Veiga heading to Tyneside. They have completely squashed the stories coming out of Spain, which did seem rather leftfield when they emerged last week.

However, it did lead to a lot of excitement from Toon fans, who have been researching the ‘amazing‘ 21-year-old ever since.

Fans even saw him score a brace on Sunday, with Veiga bagging two goals to help Celta Vigo beat Barcelona and preserve their La Liga status. The youngster was in tears when he was withdrawn, which hinted towards a transfer this summer.

That could still be the case, but it does not look like he is going to be on his way to Newcastle.

While Newcastle might not be the ones to activate his £35million release clause, a move to the Premier League is reportedly on the cards. That means we will get an immediate chance to find out if we were wrong or right not to sign the youngster.
