The forward has really kicked on at Blackburn Rovers, making a mockery of the £1.75million fee we sold him for.
He was one of the best players in the Championship this season, scoring 28 goals. Only Ivan Toney scored more – another ex-Newcastle striker sold for buttons.
Fortunately, Newcastle are still in a position to benefit from Armstrong’s departure.
When he was sold to Blackburn, the club included a 40% sell on clause, meaning 40% of whatever Blackburn receive for Armstrong goes back to Newcastle.
This could come into play this summer.
The 24-year-old is a man in demand, with a lot of Premier League clubs eyeing Armstrong.
According to the Daily Express, Southampton are at the ‘front of the queue’ as they prepare a £15million offer.
The report claims Blackburn want £20million, but would be willing to do a deal for around £16million.
Newcastle’s sell-on clause does give them an advantage, as it could be wiped out if the Magpies complete a deal.
But regardless, Newcastle are set to benefit.
If Armstrong comes back to St James’ Park, Newcastle have acquired a top player in a position that needs strengthening.
If he goes elsewhere, Newcastle will get a fair wedge of cash that could go towards other clubs.
