Andy Carroll’s Newcastle United homecoming has been far from a fairytale.
So far the striker has scored just one goal – a consolation in a 2-1 defeat to Leicester.
We’ve seen moments of promise from Carroll, as well as a constant reminder that he isn’t the player he once was.
There are moments where he looks dangerous, although other times he’s just endangering opponents.

Carroll’s return in 2019 got a mixed response. A lot of fans, myself included, got caught up in the nostalgia. Others believed it to be a publicity stunt.
Either way, we’re yet to see the Andy Carroll of old, and probably never will.
His contract is up in the summer, and it would be unwise to extend his stay.
Whilst he’s likely a good character in the squad, he’s unable to get the job done on the pitch, and thus wastes a vital space in the 25-man squad.
Armstrong in, Carroll out?
While one Geordie striker is struggling, another is thriving in the Championship.
Adam Armstrong is having the best season of his career at Blackburn.
The 24-year-old has got 18 league goals so far, with only Ivan Toney scoring more. Two players Newcastle let go scoring for fun…great.
Armstrong’s form has led to interest from the Premier League, with West Ham reportedly keen.

According to the Chronicle, however, Armstrong would be interested in a return to St James’ Park.
It seemed like a premature decision when he was let go back in 2018.
Armstrong had been a star in the youth teams, whilst also impressing for the England youngsters.
But he never got a proper chance in the Newcastle first-team, and was ultimately sold to Blackburn nearly three years ago.
Armstrong is starting to fulfil the potential he clearly had, and this summer is the perfect opportunity to bring him back.
With Callum Wilson out injured, Newcastle’s forward options look grim for the next six to eight weeks.
We need to address this issue in the summer, and Armstrong would be a perfect candidate.

He’s quick and clinical in front of goal, whilst he’s also shown at Ewood Park that he can play out wide.
Compare that to Carroll, who can only play up front with balls fired into his feet or at his head.
No matter what happens, the Magpies will benefit from Armstrong’s next move due to a 40% sell on clause in his contract.
But if he is set to be on the move this summer, Newcastle must register their interest. One Geordie in, one Geordie out.
