Newcastle United are trying to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign James Maddison, but do not want to overspend on the Leicester City ace.

Both sides are looking to snap up the England international following the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship. Combine that with Maddison‘s contract situation and it is inevitable that he leaves the King Power Stadium this summer.

He has one year left on his current deal, meaning Leicester need to cash in ahead of next season. A move away beckons, but it is unclear whether it will be to Newcastle or Tottenham.

Leicester will hope for a bidding war, and are looking to get £50million for the 26-year-old. However, his actually value is closer to £40million.

Newcastle will be keen to get the best deal possible, and are reportedly confident they can do just that.

Newcastle confident about James Maddison deal

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are confident that they can agree a good price and wage package for Maddison – one that will ensure they remain within their financial fair play parameters and are able to continue strengthening the squad ahead of next season.

The issue Eddie Howe has is that he wants multiple players during this summer’s transfer window. Therefore, the club will not want to use too much of the budget on one player.

However, Newcastle are seemingly confident that will not be the case. The noises surrounding a move to St James’ Park are becoming more and more positive, with Sky Sports stating that the Magpies are now ahead of Spurs in the race to sign Maddison, who is currently on international duty with England.

The midfielder would be a marquee arrival on Tyneside. He is the type of player we need – someone who can create something out of nothing, which is going to become vital as we come up against more and more stubborn defences. It was our kryptonite last season, as we played out multiple draws against teams lower down in the table who we could not break down.

Former Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers believes that Maddison is ‘right up there’ with the likes of Phil Foden and Jack Grealish – two players who have played important roles in Manchester City completing a historic treble this season.

The numbers speak for themselves. Maddison more than holds his own up against Foden and Grealish this season. The Leicester star got 19 goal contributions in all competitions, while Foden got 23 and Grealish registered 16.

While Newcastle are looking to get the best deal possible for Maddison, he will be worth every penny if he can replicate those figures in a black and white shirt.
