James Maddison and Newcastle United are two names who do not need introducing to each other.
The Leicester star was a major target on Tyneside last summer and a number of bids were made, though the Foxes stood firm.
Maddison continues to be linked with a move to Newcastle, who can now offer Champions League football.
That, coupled with Leicester’s relegation, is quite the shift from the situation last summer.
Still, it might not be enough.
Tottenham ready to launch quick move for James Maddison
Indeed, it seems Tottenham are ready to enter the race quickly.
The Daily Mirror suggest incoming Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou will be backed by the Spurs board and they are now ready to rival Newcastle for the £40m-rated England international.
Maddison has long been linked with a move to north London too and Spurs will reportedly look to make him one of the incoming manager’s first new signings.
All but certain to leave Leicester following their relegation and with just a year left on his contract, the race really is on.
Newcastle have to move quickly
The Maddison situation has dragged on for a while now.
Previous reports have suggested the 26-year-old, once hailed as “exceptional” by Gary Lineker, is in fact more keen on a move to Spurs. In that case, there is little time to waste.
If Newcastle really going to try to tempt him to St James’ Park, a decision needs to be made quickly. Bidding wars and rival interest can drag a saga out so it’s surely of the utmost importance they make their play for him soon or move onto other targets.
