Newcastle given the chance to sign player who Trippier says is ‘unbelievable’

Joao Felix was playing against Newcastle United on Sunday, but now could have the chance to be playing for them next season.

The 23-year-old is set to return to Atletico Madrid after his loan spell with Chelsea, with the Blues turning down the chance to make the deal a permanent one this summer.

With Felix failing to earn a Chelsea transfer, Atletico Madrid are now looking at other ways they can get rid of the Portuguese forward. And it appears that Newcastle are an option once again after missing out in January.

Newcastle offered the chance to sign Joao Felix

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Felix from Atletico Madrid this summer.

They state that another loan deal away from Atleti is possible and that Felix was keen to stay at Chelsea. A move to Stamford Bridge would mean no European football for the attacker, whereas joining Newcastle would give him the chance to play in the Champions League.

However, the Daily Mail add that wages could be an issue for the Magpies, with Felix currently earning more than £200,000-a-week. That is more than what anyone earns at Newcastle, with Bruno Guimaraes in line for a new contract worth £200,000-a-week that will make him the club’s best paid player ever.

Potential reunion with Kieran Trippier

While money could be a decisive factor, a move to Newcastle would give Felix the chance to be reunited with Kieran Trippier.

The pair played together at Atletico, and shared a moment after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. Trippier has always spoke very highly of the youngster, and has described him as an ‘unbelievable‘ player.

We saw glimpses of that during Felix’s stint in the Premier League. He produced some fantastic moments, but was powerless in stopping Chelsea’s slide down the table.

While he was capable of him wonderful tricks and flicks, his numbers were not great. In 16 Premier League appearances, he provided four goals.

He is certainly an incredibly gifted footballer, while his friendship with Trippier could help his cause, but it is difficult to see Newcastle taking up the offer to sign Felix this summer given the finances involved.
