Newcastle United are believed to have made an approach for one of their summer targets who is keen on making the move.

With no incomings or outgoings expected in the final couple of days of the January window Newcastle’s recruits can turn their full attention to what will be a very important summer.

A new report from Goal Brazil now claims that Newcastle have made an approach for Atalanta’s Ederson who is believed to be willing to leave Italy in the summer.

Newcastle are not alone in their interest in star midfielder

This is not Newcastle’s first sign of interest in the Brazilian midfielder – they have been tracking Ederson for weeks now ahead of the January window, but a summer move looks far more likely.

Newcastle are very keen to bring in a new midfield option, though it’s not quite clear how that will be affected in the summer when Sandro Tonali returns from suspension and Joe Willock is back from injury.

One issue that the Magpies will face in their bid to sign the star Atalanta man is that his good form in Serie A has attracted a number of suitors including Man United, Liverpool and PSG.

It’s going to be tough for Newcastle to compete with elite clubs in the market given they are more likely to be able to offer them a higher wage and an immediate better chance of winning silverware, but it is their long-term project which is so attractive to players.

Newcastle planning for a big summer

Having not spent a penny in January, Newcastle will be hoping that they have the freedom to bring in at least a couple of high quality players in six months time to really take their team to the next level.

This season has proven that they don’t yet have the squad depth to be able to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League to the best of their abilities and have often been left short in some positions.

Now, for example, injuries to Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson means their is no recognised striker available while there are also only three midfielders currently at Eddie Howe’s disposal.

Players like Ederson, who arrive with some European pedigree, will be so important to take Newcastle up that next step in the new campaign, it’s just a matter if they can first attract them and then afford them.
