There is still time for Newcastle United to make a major signing this summer, even if their centre-back search is over.

The Magpies have been trying to bring in Marc Guehi, but that deal has collapsed. Newcastle have pulled out of a deal to sign Guehi, much to the disappointment of the 24-year-old.

Guehi was the only centre-back that Eddie Howe wanted, meaning a defender will not arrive at St James’ Park before the transfer window closes at 11pm.

However, there could still be some business. It was reported earlier today that Newcastle are in talks to complete one incoming transfer, while Geordie Boot Boys were told that the Magpies are targeting a late deal for a winger.

The identity of that winger had remained a secret, until now.

According to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Newcastle United are pursuing a deal to sign Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

Crook wrote on X: “#NUFC are exploring a big-money for #NFFC winged Anthony Elanga.”

He has also added on X: “Told this one is developing quickly and likely to be done.”

TalkSPORT have stated that Nottingham Forest want £35million for Elanga, with talks between the two clubs ongoing ahead of the transfer window closing tonight.

They also state that if Newcastle do complete a deal for Elanga, a portion of the fee will go to Manchester United. That is because they included a sell-on clause when they sold the Sweden international to Forest last summer.

Newcastle wanted Elanga earlier this summer

This is not the first time that Newcastle United have been linked with signing Elanga.

He was a target for the Magpies back in June, at a time when they were trying to solve their PSR nightmare.

Newcastle ended up selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million, with Odysseas Vlachodimos moving the other way for £20million.

That was the only way that Newcastle could get the Anderson deal done, but they had initially wanted Elanga to arrive at St James’ Park instead of Vlachodimos. However, that was not possible.

Since then, Newcastle have continued to be linked with Elanga, and are now trying to strike a late deal for the 22-year-old.

However, there is not a lot of time for Newcastle to reach an agreement, as Paul Mitchell aims to relieve the pressure on him in the final few hours of the window.
