Newcastle United appear to be stepping up their bid to trim their squad ahead of the new season, with Jamal Lewis edging closer towards an exit.
The left-back is a target for Watford, who are keen to sign him on loan for the 2023/24 season. They face competition from Swansea City, who have also shown an interest in Lewis.
With a queue forming, it looks all but certain that Lewis is going to leave Newcastle, and Toon officials have now held talks about the 25-year-old’s departure.
Watford in talks with Newcastle over Jamal Lewis
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle and Watford have been in talks about the Hornets signing Lewis on loan.
They state that while terms of the deal are yet to be finalised, a move to Watford currently looks to be more likely than a switch to Swansea.

The £15million man is Watford’s top defensive target, as they look to enhance their squad ahead of the new Championship season.
His Newcastle future could soon become clearer
Lewis has been involved in Newcastle’s pre-season preparations, starting on the left of attack against Gateshead and Rangers.
He is now in America with the rest of the Toon team, but was not involved in the 3-3 draw with Aston Villa.
Whether or not that had anything to do with his future remains to be seen, but it will be telling if he is once again not included when Newcastle face Chelsea on Wednesday night.

While Howe stated that Lewis could be an ‘important’ player at the start of last season, that has not proven to be the case. The Northern Ireland international struggled for minutes last year, and has shown nothing in pre-season to suggest he should be playing more.
A loan move is for the best, with Watford seemingly leading the race to sign him.
