Jamal Lewis has featured in Newcastle United’s first two pre-season games so far but he could soon be on his way out of the club on a temporary basis at least.

Newcastle signed Jamal Lewis from Norwich City for £15million in 2020 but the Northern Ireland international has struggled to break his way into the starting eleven at St James’ Park.

Last season was a tough one for Lewis who spent a lot of time on the sidelines through injury and ended the season having played more football for his country than his club. Lewis amassed just nine minutes of game time in the Premier League all season.

Lewis has almost played more this pre-season than he did all last season

The 25-year-old has almost played more minutes in two pre-season friendlies this month than he did in the entirety of last season in all competitions.

It’s really Eddie Howe‘s first chance to get a really good look at him since he came in such is Lewis’ injury record, but it’s still expected that Lewis will be allowed to leave Newcastle this summer.

Having watched him in action this pre-season it’s clear he’s still got a lot of rust to shake off. There’s even a feeling amongst supporters that he’s just not up to the standard Eddie Howe has now set.

Watford and Swansea are set to battle it out for Newcastle’s Lewis on loan

Championship sides Watford and now Swansea City have an interest in taking the left-back on loan for the upcoming season according to Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop who tweeted: “Swansea have joined Watford in the battle to sign Newcastle left-back Jamal Lewis on loan. The Swans have looked at the prospect of signing Lewis although Werder Bremen’s Lee Buchanan still their top target to replace Ryan Manning”

Lewis is on a hefty £38,462-a-week at Newcastle (via Spotrac) until 2025, which is what could make it difficult for the Magpies to move him on in a permanent deal to a Championship club.

It’s early stages yet and Lewis could still be in line to feature for Newcastle in the Premier League Summer Series game against Aston Villa tonight.
