Newcastle United are struggling to get players out of the door this summer, but might now have the chance to move Jamal Lewis on – temporarily, at least.
The Northern Ireland international is one of multiple players who Eddie Howe is looking to get rid of ahead of the new campaign.
Lewis has barely featured since Howe became manager, and made just two Premier League appearances for the Magpies last season. Howe admitted himself that he has not been able to give Lewis the opportunities he needs, but did state that it was ‘brilliant‘ to see him improving behind the scenes.
That improvement is not going to lead to a fresh chance at St James’ Park, but it could allow him to impress at his next destination. And that could be the Championship.
Watford want Jamal Lewis on loan from Newcastle
According to the Daily Mail, Watford want to sign Lewis on loan ahead of the new season. The Hornets are eyeing a temporary deal for the 25-year-old, who is no longer in Howe’s plans.

He was involved in the 3-2 win over Gateshead on Saturday, playing as a left winger where he had limited success. That could prove to be one of his final appearances in a Toon shirt, especially if Watford formalise their interest with an approach.
A move down south could be good for Lewis. Regardless, he needs a fresh start. His £15million move to Newcastle has been a disaster, and he will only slip further down the pecking order if Howe gets the new left-back he is after.
His Premier League credentials have taken a real battering since his move to Tyneside, which is why joining a Championship club could be the best thing for his career.

If he goes to Watford and impresses, he might be able to earn a permanent move. That is what Newcastle will hope for, as Lewis has a contract at SJP until 2025.
In an ideal world, he leaves permanently this summer, but that is easier said than done. And with Watford showing an interest in a loan deal, it could be the perfect opportunity to trim the senior squad down and make space for new signings.
