Sandro Tonali is edging closer to a move from AC Milan to Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old has emerged as the Magpies’ top target after Nicolo Barella proved to be too expensive. It did look like a deal for Tonali could follow the same path, but a compromise was seemingly reached on Wednesday night.

It was reported in Italy that Eddie Howe’s side are willing to pay £60million for the midfielder, and that was followed by multiple stories claiming that an agreement between the two clubs is now close.

Tonali now appears to be on course to become Newcastle’s first senior signing of the summer, following the youth arrival of Yankuba Minteh.

Getting Tonali is a huge statement of intent, and just sums up the incredible pulling power that the Magpies now have.

With a fee close to being agreed, the next hurdle is personal terms. However, it does not sound like an agreement is far away in that respect either.

How much money Sandro Tonali is going to earn at Newcastle

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are ‘on the verge’ of agreeing personal terms with the Italy international. He states that Tonali is going to sign a six-year deal with the club, which will keep him at St James’ Park until 2029.

The transfer expert adds that Tonali will earn a base rate of £6.9million-a-year a Newcastle, plus a potential £1.7million in add-ons. That means he could earn a total sum of £8.6million-a-year, which works out at around 165,000-a-week.

That kind of money means he will become Newcastle’s best paid player – although that could change when Bruno Guimaraes signs a new contract with the club. It has been rumoured that he could soon earn £200,000-a-week on Tyneside.

But for Tonali, it is a huge pay rise. It was reported on Wednesday that Newcastle would be willing to double his £75,000-a-week wages, and it appears that is going to be the case.

With a fee nearly agreed and a contract on the verge of being finalised, it now looks like only a medical stands between Tonali officially becoming a Newcastle United player.
