Newcastle United are yet to reach an agreement with Southampton as they look to sign Tino Livramento.
The week started with talk that the Magpies were in advanced talks to sign Livramento from the Saints. There is even confidence that Eddie Howe’s side can complete a deal for the defender.
But nothing is agreed yet, and the sell-on clause that Chelsea have in his contract complicates Newcastle’s pursuit. The Blues sold the ‘excellent‘ right-back to Southampton for £4million two years ago.
Livramento has been identified as an ideal backup to Kieran Trippier, who will turn 33 later this year. He is not going to be able to play every game, so Howe needs a strong reserve option who he can draft in when required.
The 20-year-old fits the bill, and is someone who Toon Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has liked for a long time. He will hope he can bring Livramento to Tyneside, but it remains to be seen if a deal will be possible.
Livramento happy at Southampton as Newcastle eye deal
According to the Daily Echo, Livramento is happy at Southampton. They state that he is very grateful to the club’s staff after helping him come back form an ACL injury that cost him a year of his career.
Whether or not that gratitude will lead to Livramento staying put remains to be seen. But the fact that he is happy at St Mary’s perhaps suggests that he will not push for a move away.
You have to imagine that he would be interested in a move to St James’ Park. It would give him the chance to play in the Champions League, joining a club with a clear long-term project and vision.
On the flip side, he has only played one full year of senior football. He may opt to stay at Southampton where he is guaranteed to play regular minutes following his return from injury.
Hopefully Newcastle can get this deal done, as Livramento could have a really bright future in a black and white shirt. He is already a top talent, and would get even better under the guidance of Trippier.
