Newcastle absolutely love Sven Botman’s old teammate, want to sign him in 2024

The next centre-back that Newcastle United sign should be Sven Botman’s long-term partner at St James’ Park.

While Fabian Schar continues to excel in black and white alongside Botman, there will come a time when the Magpies must look to replace him.

That did happen during the summer, with Eddie Howe’s side heavily linked with signing Joachim Andersen from Crystal Palace. There was also interest in the likes of Antonio Silva from Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.

In the end, Newcastle did not have the funds to bring in a centre-back, and had to stick with what they had. That has ultimately led to Jamaal Lascelles getting a run in the team, and he is performing brilliantly as of late.

But there will come a time when a new centre-back arrives, and it could happen in 2024.

That is the plan, and Newcastle are now looking into the possibility of reuniting Botman with one of his former Lille teammates.

Newcastle interested in Tiago Djalo

According to 90min, Newcastle are interested in signing Tiago Djalo from Lille next year.

The 23-year-old is out of contract next summer, and is currently the subject of Serie A giants Inter Milan.

But he has been linked with Newcastle before, and is once again on the Magpies’ radar.

The report from 90min states that the Magpies are huge admirers of Djalo, and have been tracking him for a long time. They add that Newcastle have been following his rehabilitation, as he works his way back from a knee injury that has kept him out for almost the entirety of 2023.

Now 2024 could see him change clubs and be reunited with Botman. The pair spent two years alongside each other in France, and helped Lille win the Ligue 1 title in 2021.

Djalo is a versatile defender who can play anywhere across the backline, which will make him appealing to Howe. However, his priority has to be centre-back, as he already has Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall as his future fullbacks.

If Newcastle do decide to make a move for Djalo, they must believe he has the potential to be a Premier League star alongside Botman, and who are we to judge the Toon recruitment team. They have got so much right in recent years, and must see something special in the Portuguese defender.
