It’s quite clear that Newcastle United will need depth in their squad ahead of next season.
Indeed, it’s been a long time since Eddie Howe welcomed a first-team ready new signing into Newcastle United.
Not since the summer of 2023 have Newcastle signed a player of such profile, largely because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Still, Newcastle are confident they are in a strong PSR position ahead of a hugely important summer transfer window.
Howe cannot keep being expected to perform miracles with the same squad for season after season. With a Champions League campaign to come and increase the games on the schedule, fresh faces simply have to arrive.
Newcastle want to sign four players this summer, including a goalkeeper, a striker, a centre-back and a new right winger.
Still, a new claim has emerged amid links with Manchester City’s James McAtee.

Newcastle United could sign new midfielder if players leave
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle could actually look for a new central midfielder if players leave the club this summer.
Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock are all options there currently, so it’s fairly surprising to hear they’d pursue a new addition given the level of funds needed to be spent elsewhere.
While seemingly not deemed a priority, they will reportedly look for a new signing in that position if there are departures. A younger profile will be sought, which McAtee would certainly fit.
Man City are prepared to sell McAtee for £25million and the 22-year-old can operate there.
The player James McAtee could replace at Newcastle United
The Daily Telegraph’s Luke Edwards recently revealed Newcastle want to make two big-name signings this summer, as well as two younger “prospects” on top of that.
McAtee can hardly be considered a prospect given he’s played at the highest of levels for City, albeit not a regular basis.
Newcastle are interested in McAtee, however, and the idea of him signing is exciting – particularly if there’s a departure in midfield.
Willock has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace and the England U21 international has been tipped as his replacement.
