Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Marc Guehi have been hit by interest from Liverpool.
Guehi has been a target for Newcastle, with Eddie Howe once again eyeing the centre-back who Paul Mitchell failed to bring in 12 months ago.
Talk of a move to Tyneside had suddenly gone quiet, and there are now fears that he could be leaving Crystal Palace to go elsewhere. Liverpool want to sign Guehi, as they aim to quickly replace the Bayer Leverkusen-bound Jarell Quansah.
Interest from the Premier League champions is a serious problem for Newcastle, whose centre-back search could be about to take another hit. The Magpies have already missed out on Dean Huijsen, while Illia Zabarnyi could be going elsewhere too.

Who Marc Guehi wants to sign for this summer
Newcastle tried to sign Guehi in 2024, with the England international eager to move to St James’ Park. While he did not agitate or try to push the deal through, there was a desire to join Eddie Howe’s side.
Unfortunately, it is a different story in 2025.
According to the Chronicle, Guehi’s preference is to join Liverpool this summer, with his representatives wanting the defender to head to Anfield.
Who Newcastle looked at instead of Marc Guehi in 2024
When it emerged that Newcastle were not going to sign Guehi last summer, alternatives began to emerge.
Axel Disasi was floated as an option for Newcastle. However, Howe was not convinced about signing the Frenchman who went on to score an own goal at St James’ Park a few months later.
Edmond Tapsoba was also linked with Newcastle, but Bayer Leverkusen did not want to sell him.
In the end, the Magpies decided not to bring anyone in and plough on with the options they already had. That was a risk, but it paid off. Newcastle achieved their goals, while their PSR position did not suffer.
Whether or not Tapsoba is still an option for Howe in 2025 is unknown.
Elsewhere, Newcastle remain interested in Malick Thiaw. The AC Milan defender was their top target last year before stepping up their pursuit of Guehi.
