Manchester United are now rivalling Newcastle United in their interest of a Barcelona defender who could soon be on his way out.

Newcastle have been tracking Andreas Christensen for some time now with the club looking to find a new central defender to add strength in depth into the back line.

However, a move has never materialised for the former Chelsea man and now, according to a report from Sport, Manchester United are stepping up their interest in the ‘extraordinary‘ Christensen in January.

Newcastle want a top defender to replace Fabian Schar

This isn’t anything against Schar who is actually playing at the top of his game right now and you could even argue that he’s been more important to Newcastle than Sven Botman this season.

However, the Swiss international turned 32-years-old last month and the club have to always be looking forwards and protecting their future, so a replacement will certainly be on the minds of those at the top of the club.

Christensen was identified as a possible candidate to replace the right-sided centre-back towards the beginning of 2023, though the club never actually put in a concrete offer.

Manchester United could now look to hijack Newcastle’s plans with a move for the former Premier League winner who is still an important part of Barcelona’s team but could soon be replaced with a younger defender.

Man United hoping to beat Newcastle in more ways than one

Man United are hoping to enter a new era following Jim Ratcliffe’s 25% purchase of the club, and a lot of what they are hoping for rests on beating Newcastle.

Not only are both teams in the running for Christensen, Man United are also looking to poach Dan Ashworth from Newcastle while the two clubs battle it out in the Premier League for European finishes.

Last year, both teams qualified for the Champions League having competed alongside each other all season and the two also met at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final, though Man United had the last laugh in that game.

Now, Newcastle are hoping they can get one over their league rivals by bringing Christensen to Tyneside, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.
