Newcastle United are very interested in Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen as injuries continue to pile up for Eddie Howe.
Injuries all over the pitch are restricting Newcastle this season and are having a huge impact on their performances across all competitions.
January will be a huge window for the Magpies as they look to add strength in depth, and one name that keeps cropping up is Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen who SPORT believe to be a big target.
Captain Jamaal Lascelles is currently enjoying a long spell in the team due to an injury to Sven Botman and has rarely put a foot wrong. However, Howe will not feel comfortable knowing that they are one injury away from relying on Paul Dummett to get us through the upcoming Christmas period.
Newcastle had held previous interest in Christensen earlier in the year, and it seems that has now resurfaced.
Christensen has impressed in Barcelona
The centre-back signed for the Spanish giants from Chelsea last summer on a free transfer and played a key role in their great form domestically last season.
Despite some injuries, Christensen made 23 appearances for Barcelona in La Liga last year and impressed manager Xavi with his ability on the ball, sparking interest from the likes of Newcastle.
That said, the 27-year-old was unhappy with being left out of the team for games against Porto and Real Sociedad with four top defenders currently vying for two positions in the starting 11.
On his defender’s performances back in May, Xavi said, “He’s an extraordinary defender in the way that we play, how he distributes the ball, how he divides, how he plays the third man.
“He could be a midfielder playing at the back. I’m very happy with him, an extraordinary signing.”

Barcelona unwilling to lose star man
Though there is a lot of interest from Newcastle and other Premier League sides, Barcelona are unwilling to depart with Christensen in the January transfer window.
The La Liga champions value him so highly and, despite him being frustrated with the rotation of defenders, have no plans to move him on in the near future.
Newcastle will therefore have to provide a very attractive offer to the Danish international if they are to pry him away from Catalonia where he has already won a league title and will be hoping to compete for the Champions League.
It’s a tough ask but it would be a brilliant addition to the squad and bring some much needed European experience that Newcastle have been lacking so far this season.
