Manchester United could hijack Newcastle’s move for ‘exemplary’ £25m target

It will be fascinating to see where Newcastle United go in the January transfer window.

Indeed, the club endured such an underwhelming summer transfer window that club Alan Shearer publicly declared owners PIF had “failed” manager Eddie Howe.

Still, the Newcastle United owners have reportedly stressed that they reman as ambitious as ever at St James’ Park and there are said to have been positive noises in regards to their spending power going forward.

The January market, however, is a notoriously arduous one. Newcastle enjoyed a lot of success in it just after the takeover and then again in 2023 with the signing of Anthony Gordon but have largely been quiet in it since the initial wave of additions.

One man who seemingly won’t be coming in the New Year is Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney. Hailed as “exemplary” for his development on Teesside by Michael Carrick, the 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Newcastle for a while.

There are, however, complications.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Boro have little intention of selling Hackney to Newcastle or indeed Tottenham (another supposedly interested party) in January.

They then suggest that Manchester United could enter the picture if the player does become available this summer and that both Newcastle and Spurs are aware the Old Trafford giants could pose a danger to their respective pursuits.

For their part, Boro are said to value their player at around £25m.

Newcastle may have to get used to bidding wars

Bidding wars are not really something Newcastle have got involved with in recent years and the potential emergence of rival interest in Marc Guehi is said to be concerning them ahead of the January window.

Still, it may become more of an issue going forward. Simply put, good players attract interest from all across the Premier League and beyond.

At some point, they’re going to have to go up against another club to land a compelling target.
