Man United change their mind over Newcastle target, they’d rather sell player who loves Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United’s January search for a midfielder might not lead them to Manchester United.

The Magpies are looking to bring someone in to replace the suspended Sandro Tonali, with the likes of Kalvin Phillips being linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Another player who has been on Eddie Howe’s radar is Scott McTominay, after the Scotland international proved to be too expensive during the summer.

It looked like he was going to be a major target earlier this year, with a switch to Tyneside feeling slightly inevitable.

However, he remained at Old Trafford and has been one of Erik ten Hag’s better players this season.

Rumours of interest from Newcastle have continued, although it was suggested that his price tag could be an issue.

Now another issue has emerged, with Man United keen to keep him at Old Trafford.

Manchester United want to keep Scott McTominay

According to the Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Man United have changed their mind about McTominay and will no longer listen to offers for the 27-year-old.

In his weekly newsletter ‘Reading The Game’, Delaney adds that the Red Devils would be more inclined to get rid of Casemiro, who plays in the same position as McTominay.

Casemiro, who recently heaped praise on Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, has struggled for fitness this season, and could now be on his way out of Man United.

It is a testament to McTominay’s efforts that they would rather keep him than a player who achieved so much at Real Madrid. But context is everything and while Casemiro battles with injury, McTominay is amongst the goals.

After his poor display against the Magpies, McTominay bounced back with a brace to help Man United beat Chelsea 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Given the impact he is having, it is no surprise that the Red Devils do not want to lose McTominay.

And even if they were happy to let him go, a move to Tyneside would still be difficult. There is surely no way that Man United would let him leave on loan, while FFP means we probably do not have the finances to sign him permanently.

Kalvin Phillips looks like a much better fit, with his Manchester City career seemingly set to come to an end.
