Newcastle United believe they’ve received enough encouragement to make a bid for Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips in January.

Phillips has been on the radar at Newcastle for a while now, but the midfielder has previously wanted to fight for his place at Man City even despite the amount of quality that they possess in midfield.

The Northern Echo are now reporting that Newcastle feel as though they have received enough encouragement from City to make a January bid for the 27-year-old in hopes of a permanent move.

Midfielder could be perfect for Newcastle

Newcastle are in desperate need of a new midfielder due to the 10-month suspension of Sandro Tonali who will not return until August 2024.

Phillips could solve a lot of issues for Eddie Howe and is the perfect type of player that the manager likes to work with. During his time at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa, Phillips was a hardworking and energetic midfielder who ran himself into the ground for his team.

At Man City he has not been able to show his true ability due to a number of reasons, but Howe will be able to bring the best out of Phillips at Newcastle.

There’s a reason Manchester City paid £45m for him in 2022, Pep Guardiola clearly saw something special in the English international, it just hasn’t worked out for him.

Phillips has previously been described as ‘outrageous’ by his City teammate John Stones.

Speaking on Manchester City’s YouTube channel, Stones said: “Easily his range of passing and how he’s always in the right place on the pitch, his positioning and some of the passes he plays [are] outrageous.”

Phillips’ time at Manchester City is over

Though he had wanted to stay and fight for a starting spot at Man City, things have not gone to plan for the former Leeds man. Phillips has not yet started a Premier League game despite both Rodri and Stones being unavailable at times this season.

With Euro 2024 right around the corner and Phillips keen to keep his place in the England team, Newcastle are surely his best option in January for life after Man City.

Not only would the midfielder get regular minutes, he would be playing for a side looking to get back into Europe for a second successive season and in the hunt for a first domestic trophy in 68 years after last season’s heartbreak.

Phillips cannot waste any more time sitting on the bench at the Etihad if he wants his career to progress and Newcastle are offering him the perfect escape this January.
